Translation of Guàrdia de nit, by Brett Hetherington and Antoni Cardona
[Inspired by Joan Salvat-Papasseit’s (1894-1924) "Nocturn per a acordió"]

You are here: I did emergency night duty.
You don’t know
what it is
to do night duty:
but I have seen suffering
vats of it
on the beds,
and in the waiting room congealing anguish,
appearing as delusion, dyspneas
and throbbing hemorrhages.

When the Mossos d’Esquadra* brought in the wounded
and the leaden sky was a bad omen
a sea of strokes and hearts attacks came to you
and you were caught in the wolf’s throat.

Shoulder to shoulder
with others like you,
witnesses
to a heart that is saying enough
or a body that convulses without end.
When parents and children beg for miracles,
conjuring tricks without words.
When the night
is darker than ever,
your hands turn clumsy.
When sleep is defeating you
and still, in front of you
the howls of a human
who asks
for death’s pardon.

And you live all this exactly as if you were their brother,
you don’t know if it’s a clamour
deep from the earth
or a challenge, your struggle.

The darkness of night in silence
is a great cavern,
where eyes ask
for a little respite,
a cruel dream goes through you:
you see yourself as the dormitory guard
where suffering bodies live,
so many bed sheets that are now shrouds.
Ashes of guilt rain over you.
.

However much you dress up in green or white
you cannot hide it:
you are a monster,
a god destroyed,
a nothing, a fairground charlatan.

* * *

But you are saved by the bell
with the first light
of the waking sun.
Weighing up the pros and cons
the night hasn’t been so grim.
Someone puts out their hand to you,
at shift change,
an energetic replacement,
they ask you
if you’ve had a quiet night,
and wish you a really good day.

Heus aquí: jo he fet guàrdia d’urgències de nit.
(Vosaltres no sabeu
que és
fer guàrdia de nit:
però jo he vist patiment
a barrals
sobre els llits,
i a la sala d'espera agrumollar-se l'angoixa,
feta deliri
i angors,
i hemorràgies glatint.

Quan els mossos d'esquadra duien ferits
I un cel de plom era mal averany
et venien a dojo ictus, infarts
i et trobaves perdut en la gola del llop.

Braç a braç
amb tants d’altres com tu,
testimonis
d’un cor que diu prou
o un cos que convulsa sens fi.
Quan pares i fills imploren miracles,
conjurs sense mots.
Quan la nit
és més fosca que mai,
les mans se’t fan balbes.
Vencent-te la son
i encara, al davant
esgarips d’un humà
que demana
clemència a la mort.

I ho vius talment com si fossis germà,

i et plouen cendres culpables
per tants de llençols
que són ara sudaris.

Malgrat disfressar-te de verd o de blanc
No pots amagar que ets un monstre:
un déu trinxat,
un no res, un xerraire de fira.

* * *

Però la campana et salva
amb la llum primera
del sol que es desperta.
El balanç de la nit
no és tan inclement.
T’arriba qui et dona la mà,
un relleu d’energia,
et demana si ha estat
tranquil·la la nit,
i vol de debò que tinguis bon dia.
